Owner: Christopher Dimon Location: Southampton, NY Vehicle: '66 Mustang Hardtop Color: Black Engine: 200 I-6/351W V-8 Length Of Ownership: 5 Months Primary Use: Daily driver Christopher Dimon is yet another young owner who has always wanted a Mustang, and definitely one built as a restomod. As many young owners have come to realize, early Mustangs are not the cheapest projects to purchase in order to make their dream come true. This '66 coupe came to Christopher by way of chance. While working as a technician at a local Ford dealer, a coworker brought in his '66 Mustang and told Christopher he had to sell it quick. After a quick phone call to his wife to explain Christopher's lifelong dream of restoring a Mustang and finally having the opportunity present itself, she approved and he was the proud owner for a mere 500 bucks! Within a week, Christopher had scored a 351W long-block (it was given to him), and everything began to fall into place. The coupe needs the floorpans replaced , and he has some exterior rust repair to contend with. The '66 also needs a full interior. "As it stands now, the car runs and drives well," Christopher says. His plans for the restomod include adding fuel injection to his 351W engine swap, power four-wheel disc brakes, and a front suspension upgrade with rack-and-pinion steering. It looks as though Christopher's luck has continued by winning the Yo Club sweepstakes this month, with a gift certificate from the company that knows restomods inside and out, Mustangs Plus. Mustangs Plus For being this month's YO Club winner, Christopher will receive a $400 gift certificate from Mustangs Plus. Mustangs Plus has been supplying and developing parts for Mustangs for over 25 years. While restoration has always been a part of the company's focus, Mustangs Plus has evolved into a one-stop restoration and performance shop, offering parts for street Mustangs, both restored and restomod, as well as road-racing machines. In fact, Mustangs Plus bills itself as "Restomod Headquarters" with a well-stocked line of fiberglass body panels (including Eleanor conversions), sound systems, power windows, steering wheels, tilt columns, EFI and five-speed conversion kits, rack-and-pinion steering, and aftermarket wheels. 68 GT500KR - Authentically Perfect
- 68 GT500KR - Authentically Perfect
Sometimes timing is everything. During our trip to Shelby Parts and Restoration last fall to photograph Carroll Shelby's '69 GT500 convertible before it crossed the block at Barrett-Jackson, we wandered into Jim Cowles' restoration domain just as a customer's '68 Shelby GT500KR was being completed. In fact, it was still on the lift, providing the perfect opportunity to document the details of a fresh rotisserie, concours restoration. "It's restored as close as possible to a new GT500KR," Jim says. "We didn't try to make it perfect, just authentic." Jim says the KR arrived at his shop as a nice 80,000-mile example. It was tired but still had its original fiberglass and drivetrain. "That's the stuff I like to see," Jim says. He does admit to a few concessions in his quest for authentic perfection. Many of the parts needed for the restoration were impossible to find, or simply too expensive. "We try to keep hard-to-find items on hand, but in this case we didn't have the correct tie rods without the grease fittings. We couldn't find any, so we used the more common replacement tie rods with fittings." In addition to the original fiberglass, the KR was still equipped with much of its factory equipment, including the air cleaner assembly, dashpad, carburetor, and transmission. Those components, along with the car's original Shelby elements, were refurbished for the restoration. Jim says all '68 Shelbys were delivered with hubcaps, but this KR, like many other '68 Shelbys, had the popular 10-spoke wheels, added either by a previous owner or by the selling dealer as an upgrade. Reproductions of the E70x15 Polyglas tires aren't available, so Jim used two N.O.S. originals from his parts stockpile and located two others through his contacts in the vintage Shelby parts underground. Shortly after completing the restoration, Jim accompanied the KR to Scottsdale, Arizona, for the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction. The car sold for $160,000, which was less than Jim and the owner expected. "Green probably isn't the best color for Barrett-Jackson," Jim says, an observation backed up by the fact that yellow and red GT500KR fastbacks sold for $15,000 and $40,000 more, respectively, during the '08 auction. The new owner obviously got a deal on one of the most authentically perfect GT500KRs in existence. Photo Gallery: 68 GT500KR - Authentically Perfect - Mustang Monthly Magazine

2008 Silver Springs All-Ford Roundup - Winter Wonderland
- 2008 Silver Springs All-Ford Roundup - Winter Wonderland
North-central Florida in January can be an iffy proposition. It can be Chamber of Commerce beautiful with temperatures in the 80s, or it can more closely resemble the frozen tundra from farther north. For this year's rendition of the Mustang and Ford Round-Up at Silver Springs, the Chamber of Commerce must have special-ordered the spring-like weather--well, except for Sunday afternoon's rain--that no doubt contributed to the record-breaking attendance. The Mustang and Ford Round-Up, hosted by National Parts Depot, has become a rite of winter for Floridians and East Coasters looking to escape the cold and snow. By offering free registration, which includes two tickets to the famous Silver Springs park, to the first 1,000 registered vehicles, NPD makes the deal too good to resist, as evidenced by license plates from Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, and other states to the north. This year's turnout set yet another event record with 1,103 Mustangs and Fords packed into every nook and cranny of the Silver Springs grounds. In recognition of the Cobra Jet's 40th anniversary, the Mustang Monthly Editor's Choice Award went to David Garton's pale yellow '68 1/2 GT/CJ Mustang fastback. Unfortunately, due to Sunday's rain, we were unable to get a photo. Our apologies to David. Previously held on the weekend after New Year's, this year's 14th annual Mustang and Ford Round-Up was moved back to the second weekend in January to provide participants a bit more separation from the holidays. That's the plan for next year as well, with the show scheduled for January 10-11, 2009. Happy Trails The annual Pony Trails cruise from NPD's Ocala headquarters to the quaint fishing village of Cedar Key on the Gulf of Mexico has become such a tradition that local citizens bring out the lawn chairs so they can watch the procession roll by. This year, 145 Fords, mostly Mustangs, departed NPD for the 1 1/2-hour trek to the coast, where everyone had a chance to shop and visit the local restaurants. Afterwards, Pony Trails participants were invited back to NPD to check out the company's car museum or put their Mustang to the test on a mobile chassis dyno. How to Install Louvered Side Window Covers
- How to Install Louvered Side Window Covers
The '05-'08 Mustang is a sure-fire hit among enthusiasts, so much so that it's almost impossible to own one without another one just like it showing up down the street. Fortunately, there are a myriad of products available for dressing up a new Mustang. Among the most popular -and easiest to install - are the covers for the C-pillar side windows on '05-'08 coupes. Classic Design Concepts offers the covers in both louvered and non-louvered versions. We prefer the louvers for both their aesthetic appearance and because they provide some rearward visibility in situations when you're pulling into traffic from an angle. The CDC covers are made from molded urethane, and as such they must be painted to match the Mustang's exterior color by an automotive paint professional. From there, installation is about as easy as it gets. The covers are supplied with 3M acrylic foam tape, isopropyl alcohol packages for cleaning, and Adhesion Promoter to properly bond the tape to the urethane. All you'll need is 80-120 grit sandpaper and masking tape for positioning the covers on the car.

December 2007 YO Club Winner
Owner: Ian Bailey Location: Redlands, CA Vehicle: '66 Mustang Hardtop Color: Red Engine: 200 ci I-6 Length Of Ownership: 2 Years Primary Use: Restoration Project Ian Bailey shared his story with us via an e-mail: Upon my way home from work, I saw my dream girl. There she was, with "for sale" signs all over her. My first thought was, It's probably already sold. I peeked through the window, felt the roof, closed my eyes, and just imagined fixing her up and driving her. Well, it wasn't sold, and the owners liked me the most out of everybody who called and stopped by. Immediately following New Year's weekend of 2005, they sold it to me for $1,200 cash. I can't describe the feeling of maturity and pride after being handed the keys to my first car-and dream car at the same time. It was quite moving. In August 2005 the unimaginable happened. My engine caught fire on the highway. Forty years of dirt, oil, and grime had caked the entire engine block, and the seals/gaskets had never been replaced-basically, the engine hadn't been properly maintained. It was at this point in time I realized that if I was going to do this, I would do it once, and do it right. I decided to do the full-on restoration. My mom and dad sold me their family car so I would have something to drive. Now I have my project car and a daily driver. So far, I've stripped the entire exterior and interior to just a shell. I'm slowly building it back up like a hot rod. I replaced the original '66 four-lug rear axle with a V-8 five-lug axle to accommodate my American racing 17-inch rims. The car will be equipped with a fully adjustable Air Ride suspension system from Air Ride Technologies. I need to buy new control arms and spindles before the front airbags, brakes, and rims can be mounted. Soon to be installed are Stainless Steel Brake disc brakes on all fours; a TCP rack-and-pinion steering kit; a Flaming River stainless steel tilt steering column; an original, wooden Grant steering wheel; and a compressed-air tank in the trunk (to control the suspension system) with switches running up to the center console. I'm keeping the original six-cylinder engine because it's not common, it gets better gas mileage, it's original, and I've already spent money on having the transmission rebuilt. The engine will also sport a chrome Clifford "6 into 2" header running through a Dr. Gas exhaust kit bringing the exhaust pipes out either side of the body kit's side skirts, just before the rear tires. Lastly, I'll tackle the interior and stereo system, but I have a long way to go before I get to this point. '69 GT350 Shelby - The Boss Shelby
'69 GT350 Shelby - The Boss Shelby
It's hard to believe that a Boss 302-powered '69 Shelby Mustang, the only one ever built, has stayed nearly unknown for all these years. Now the car has been fully restored to the way Kar Kraft assembled it in 1969. Near the end of Shelby's '65-'70 production run, Ford and Shelby planned to use Boss 302s as the foundation for a special run of 36 GT350 fastbacks. Essentially, the cars were going to be Boss 302s in Shelby clothing. Furthermore, each Boss Shelby would be Grabber Yellow with black stripes and black interior. Interestingly, Dearborn Assembly provided an early production Boss 302 in Acapulco Blue, one of the four available colors for '69 Boss 302s, as a pilot car. The solid-lifter, Trans-Am-bred Boss 302 was a perfect fit for the Shelby. After all, Shelby Mustangs got the top engine offerings. Or did they? Ford's introduction of the 428 Cobra Jet on April 1, 1968, provided a healthy dose of in-house competition for the Shelby GT500, which was powered by the lower performance Police Interceptor 428. Shelby quickly remedied this situation by introducing the '6811/42 GT500KR with Cobra Jet power in the spring of 1968. In mid-April 1969, in-house competition from the small-block side arrived with the Boss 302 Mustang. Shelby had upped the ante for the '69 GT350 by going from '68's 302-4V to the 351-4V Windsor, which matched the Boss 302 at 290 hp. But the Boss 302 was clearly the performance leader in the small-block lineup with features including four-bolt mains, canted valves, and a Holley four-barrel on an aluminum intake. The design had more potential than the 351W. Nothing had higher performance in the Mustang lineup than the Boss series. Ford homologated the Boss 302 for Trans-Am with a run of production Boss 302 fastbacks in 1969 and 1970. The Boss series also included the '69-'70 Boss 429s and the Boss 351 for 1971. These cars came from Ford's Bunkie Knudsen, who defected from General Motors to become president of Ford in January 1968. He brought with him Larry Shinoda, the talented designer who created the Boss name and image. With Boss Mustangs competing against his GT350s and GT500s, Shelby could see the writing on the wall. Figuring his time at Ford was over, he ended his program in June 1969, with leftover '69 Shelbys sold as '70s updated with front spoilers and hood stripes. Luckily, this Boss GT350 pilot car escaped after the program was scrapped. Although there are still mysteries and unknowns surrounding this particular '69 model, the following facts are clear. Ford's Dearborn Assembly plant built this Mustang with a Shelby consecutive unit number on May 6, 1969, just weeks after '69 Boss 302 production began. The car carries a Boss and Shelby VIN, 9F02G482244-the G denotes the Boss 302 engine; the consecutive unit numbers beginning with 48 were designated as Shelbys. From the car's inception, it was an executive order, with DSO number 9999. The car is listed in the Shelby American World Registry with its G-code VIN conspicuous among the M-code (351) and R-code (428 Cobra Jet) numbers. Mustangs from the "48" series went to the A.O. Smith Company in Southfield, Michigan, for final assembly into a Shelby Mustang. However, Ford shipped 9F02G482244 to Kar Kraft, the same facility where Boss 429s were built on a special assembly line. A "999" report from Ford's Customer Assistance Center reveals this '69 Shelby GT350 was built May 6, 1969, with the 302 H.O. engine, a close-ratio four-speed transmission, 3.50 Traction-Lok, power front disc brakes, Acapulco Blue exterior paint, a knitted high-back bucket interior in black, F60x15 tires, a rear sports deck, the deluxe appearance group, an AM/FM multiplex radio, tinted glass, deluxe seatbelts, racing mirrors, a heavy-duty battery, and a tachometer with a 140-mph speedometer. The car's current owner, who has requested to remain anonymous, contacted Carroll Shelby for more information about the car. Carroll explained that the engineers on the project are all deceased, including Shelby-American's head engineer, Fred Goodell. Shelby himself didn't spend much time in Dearborn in the late '60s. He never saw this Boss 302-powered GT350. The current owner wanted to call this '69 GT350 a prototype. However, Carroll was more comfortable with "pilot car," which is more appropriate because prototype implies extensive engineering and mechanical work. In reality, 9F02G482244 was a standard Boss 302 with Shelby fiberglass and equipment, including front fenders, a grille, a hood, foglamps, side scoops, a unique interior trim, a rollbar, and other Shelby-specific features. When the current owner restored this car to the concours condition seen here, he took note of the factory-drilled firewall holes to carry the foglights unique to the Shelby. Boss 302s, of course, didn't come with foglights. A previous owner found a set of Shelby wheel centercap decals and an extra foglight switch under the original carpet. Another past owner, George Huisman, owner of Classic Design Concepts in Detroit, researched Ford Archives and had no luck finding original photographs, despite his access. It's possible Ford didn't document the car with photographs. The car also proved to be the only '69-'70 Shelby with manual steering. Another unique feature is what's known as a "single-key locking system." One key opens the trunk and the doors. Other Mustangs, of course, used separate keys. At this stage of the car's saga, we enter a gray area. Speaking with past owners, the current owner believes the Boss GT350 stayed at Ford for about two months. Then a Ford engineer, whose name is unknown, managed to get the car. He removed the stripes, fiberglass, and scoops to make the Shelby less noticeable. The Shelby items that remained included the interior, rollbar, roof snakes, and five-spoke Shelby wheels. The engineer kept the car for about 10 years before selling it in 1979 or 1980. Luckily, the car survived major rust damage in its journey through the 11 owners who took the car from Michigan to Texas to Kansas to Tennessee, then back to Michigan and finally to Indiana. Other than replacing the quarter-panels, metal repair was minimal. During the restoration, the owner checked close to 50 date codes on the sheetmetal. "Ninety-five percent of them were stamped within two weeks of the build date," he says. For example, a sheetmetal date of 4-24-3D decodes as April 24th, third shift, Dearborn. The interior is 75 percent original. The transmission has the original VIN stamp, and the original C8FE block is stamped X48. The C7FE crank, rods, and heads are original for this Boss 302 as well. As a final check on originality, Carroll Shelby and Edsel Ford II have signed documents citing this Boss 302 Shelby as the one and only Shelby built with a Boss 302 engine. Shelby even signed the glovebox door with his autograph and the words "One of One." Photo Gallery: '69 GT350 Shelby - The Boss Shelby - Mustang Monthly

Owner: Amber Brush Location: Springfield, NE Vehicle: '66 Ford Mustang Color: White with blue racing stripes Engine: 302 Length Of Ownership: 2-1/2 Years Primary Use: Driver Amber Brush is quite the Mustang fan. She purchased this '66 hardtop a little less than three years ago after finding it listed for sale in her local paper as a project car. The car was in extremely rough shape when she looked at it (it needed floors and had body rust everywhere). While the owner said he had a lot of people look at the car, the condition it was in scared most of them away. Amber felt the tired Mustang deserved another chance, and she made an offer. With cash changing hands, she became the hardtop's latest owner and brought the Mustang home. Originally straight-six powered, she put a 302 and FMX transmission into the Mustang, along with a five-lug, 8-inch rear. The entire suspension was replaced and upgraded as well. After two years of hard work and several thousand dollars, Amber's Mustang now runs like a top, and she drives it every chance she gets. "Whenever I'm cruising in my Mustang, I get several thumbs-up and lookers. No one ever believes a girl did all this work. I'm already starting my next project-a '65 Mustang fastback." The '00 Mustang GT in the background is another of Amber's Mustangs. She'll make some Ford guy the perfect wife someday, don't you think?
